Did you know that there are more wineries per area in Prince Edward County than in Niagara? No?  And did you know that Prince Edward County is closer to Ottawa than Niagara? No? Well, there are and it is.

This year’s IndulgePEC saw the usual suspects troop through PEC again, enjoying what this area has to offer. While I’ll be writing more, I wanted to take the time to tell you about PEC’s oldest winery.

Waupoos,  an Ojibway word for rabbit, was created by Ed Neuser and Riata Kaimins in 1983 when they bought an old apple orchard and planted grapes instead. They produced their first vintage in 2001. A family affair from the start, the winery recently changed hands and has added maple syrup and Donini chocolate to its on-site sales. In addition, it has a seasonal restaurant with one of the nicest views in the area over the vineyards to Lake Ontario.

Today, Waupoos and its 24 year old winemaker, Amy Dickinson, grow 17 differnet varieties and use almost exclusiverly Prince Edward Country grown grapes (opinions differ within the County about whether one ought or ought not to bring in grapes from Niagara) ranging from the White Rabbit (a blend of whites) to the Baco Reserve 2011 (100% Baco). The winery will soon be making seasonal fruit wines: blueberry baco and cranberry vidal. You order any of their 21 wines from the winery and three of their most popular wines from the LCBO.

(Side note: 24 year old winemaker? Amy is just one of the many twenty-somethings transforming the County. More on that in another post).

The highlight of their wines is, for me, their Maple Ice. Available at the winery and on-line for $49.95 (375mL), it is sweet as expected but with some acidity, making it less sweet than a shot of syrup (not that I would know anything about that….I mean, who drinks maple syrup from a shot glass?). It is a sweet wine in the truest meaning of sweet but there is a hint of green apple tartness that makes it palatable. In fact, I would pour it over vanilla frozen yogurt or use it instead of treacle over a steamed pudding. If you drink it, serve it with a little seared foie gras with a teeny salt flake.

What can be more Canadian than maple ice wine? It is tree sap boiled down to its sweetest concentration, mixed with grapes pressed at their most concentrated. It’s a Canadian sugar high! Forget hockey and Tim Hortons, ignore Parliament Hill and poutine, push aside universal health care and good manners, this is what it means to be Canadian!

As you know, we here at foodiePrints have a soft spot for PEC, with its food, drink, scenery, art and cute inns. Who wouldn’t? But it’s April, kids are still in school, March Break is over and summer holidays have not yet begun. It may not be the ideal time for a get-away. Fear not, dear readers, Savvy Company has a solution to your unfufilled Prince Edward County cravings: County in the City.

On April 18th, Savvy will be hosting a number of Prince Edward County’s finest wineries at the National Arts Centre. As with last year’s event, you will be able to sample wines and also place orders for the ones you like. Fair warning, last year The Beau and I came away with a case of bubbly as well as 6 bottles of Pinot Noir on order.

Although trained as a sommelier, I pay my bills working as an IT consultant. I love what I do for a living and keep wine as my hobby. As it looks bad if you only drink, I have occasionally been known to eat as well. Growing up on four different continents, I love to cook and appreciate the cuisines of the world. But wine is my passion. With a well-stocked cellar, I am always on the hunt for new wines and love hearing from people about their latest find or interesting pairing. My approach to wine: Drink what you like. Wine reviews need not be stuffy. Numerical ratings are meaningless. If it tastes good, drink it! If you don’t like it, then it’s not the wine for you.



Love Keint-he's Pinot Noir & Pinot Meuniers. I would pair with absolutely anything (except shellfish, of course)... but in all reality I would sit down and savour either glass on their own.

Henry of Pelham 2011 Sauvignon Blanc. It has become my house white as it is a crowd pleaser for all wine tastes.

I love any wines from Ravine Vineyard in Niagara, but I really like their Redcoat wines. I would recommend it be paired with a good book on the war of 1812.


I love Harwood Estates' Just Desserts 2009 dessert wine. The perfect finish to any special meal, and would go especially well with chocolate ...

My favourite Ontario wine comes from PEC, it is the Devil's Wishbone Pinot Grigio.


I am making notes on all of these wonderful suggestions. Isn't it great to live in a province with so many wines from which to choose? Thank you all; keep the suggestions coming!


I am originally from the Niagara region and now live in Ottawa. Everytime I go back to visit family, a stop at Fielding Estate winery is a must. All of their wines are great, but I am especially fond of their Lot 17 Reisling.


I love Ontario rieslings (Cave Spring and Angel's Gate are favourites) with anything! Pairs well with shrimp pasta and spicy Thai food, but really I drink it with everything.


I would love to taste Waupoos and PEC wines again. I had the pleasure of spending a lovely few hours about six years ago with Ed Neuser as my Book Club visited the winery. It was the last gasp of beautiful fall weather as we toured the fields, the winery and of course, sampled. He was a delightful, old-world charmer. I would love to sample their new offerings. I also enjoy Sandbanks winery's offerings as well, I tend to like Rieslings or Gewürztraminers.

Without a doubt, my favourite Ontario wine is Flat Rock Gravity Pinot Noir! Mmmmmm... :)

Ted Roseman

Grilled or roasted chicken is a personal favourite for a quick meal. The best white wine to pair with chicken is a chardonnay. For a great oaked Chardonnay I’d highly suggest Kendall Jackson Vintner’s Reserve Chardonnay. This is simply a well-made and crowd pleasing Chardonnay that goes great with chicken or on its own. You’ll find a lot of peach and green apple flavours in this wine, along with tropical fruit flavours. Overall, l find that most red and white wines will go fine with chicken.

Sue Roseman

There is nothing more enjoyable than pan-fried Scallops with a maple butter sauce accompanied by fresh asparagus. This dish pairs nicely with a Riesling such as Château des Charmes Old Vines Riesling 2010 A fine accompaniment with shellfish as well. It's a light, vibrant white wine that often has citrus, floral and mineral notes. Another personal favourite is Flat Rock Cellars Riesling 2011. Riesling is a hard wine to dislike, particularly for people who generally dislike wine because of its bitterness. Trying just a glass will get you hooked.

Danny Starr

I have a bunch of great Ontario wines that I love. In the summer, I love the Cave Spring off-dry Riesling, Norman Hardie Chardonnay. The Riesling goes really well with BBQ pork. I also love Rosehall Run's Chard and Pinot (Dan Sullivan rocks). Of course, Karlo Estates has some great wines too... the Quintas and Fifth Element are both great.
