On May 6th, Bon Appetit Ottawa (BAO) will be celebrating its 18th year, raising money for dozens of local charitable causes. Billing itself as the city’s “best cocktail party,” the food and wine show welcomes an average of 2000 people to enjoy delicious creations from some of Ottawa’s top chefs, restaurants, and caterers, paired with samplings from renowned wineries and breweries.

Similar to other local food events, Bon Appetit has a mission: to provide both hunger and poverty relief in the National Capital Region (NCR). Proceeds go to support the operational needs of charities with a focus on children and the elderly. This year, there are 23 beneficiaries, including the Boys & Girls Club of Ottawa, Bruce House, Christie Lake Kids, Harmony House, School Breakfast Program (Ott Network for Education), and Meals on Wheels just to name a few. To date, BAO has raised over $1.9 million. As the event organizers like to say, “Charitable giving never tasted better!”

Tickets are $85/person (including a $50 tax receipt), but entitle attendees to partake of food and drink from over 60 purveyors. Sweet and savoury offerings are being offered by eateries ranging from causal-dining to higher-end eateries, inluding Fettuccine’s, the Courtyard Restaurant and Les Fougères. Notable regional wineries and breweries will also be represented by Beau’s All Natural Brewing, Kichesippi Beer, Hogsback, Sandbanks Winery, and Three Dog Winery, just to name a few. However, out-of-town breweries such as Alberta’s Big Rock Brewery (available in Alberta, BC, and Manitoba) and Quebec’s McAuslan Brewing will be on hand.

Last year, food trucks made such a big splash on the local culinary scene that BAO enthusiastically invited LUNCH and Stone Soup Foodworks to participate in its event. This year, there will be a food truck Alley, featuring five popular food trucks: Angry Dragonz, Mr. Churritos, LUNCH, Raon Kitchen, and The Grilled Cheeserie (also known as Golden Fries).

Teacher by day and blogger by night, I have always been passionate about food. I grew up watching my mother cook and bake as I sat at the kitchen table doing my homework. In the summers, I happily played in the backyard garden, picking strawberries as my parents tended their crops. A city girl with a love for the outdoors, my goal is to capture the ever-changing Ottawa food scene. When I’m not running, you can find me shopping for ingredients or in the kitchen cooking for my family and friends. Whether you’ve been cooking for a long time or are learning to cook for the first time, I hope you will find something delicious here to inspire you.
