Love Street Food? Check out the Food Truck Rally this Weekend

Ottawa Food Truck Rally Trophy Ottawa Food Truck Rally Trophy

With summer having ended this week (autumnal equinox on Monday), it’s time to reminisce about food experiences during the warmer weather months. This year, despite Jenn and I embarking on another major project, we lined up at a number of Ottawa’s food trucks and carts. As last year, the regular street food season will culminate in a large food truck and cart rally, organized by Sharif Virani (@thescribblr) of CreativeMornings Ottawa. The second annual Ottawa Food Truck Rally (OFTR) will be held this Saturday (tomorrow!) at Saint Paul University (223 Main Street). For those of... | Continue reading article

On May 6th, Bon Appetit Ottawa (BAO) will be celebrating its 18th year, raising money for dozens of local charitable causes. Billing itself as the city’s “best cocktail party,” the food and wine show welcomes an average of 2000 people to enjoy delicious creations from some of Ottawa’s top chefs, restaurants, and caterers, paired with samplings from renowned wineries and breweries. Similar to other local food events, Bon Appetit has a mission: to provide both hunger and poverty relief in the National Capital Region (NCR). Proceeds go to support the operational needs of charities with... | Continue reading article

Food Truck Fri…Tuesday: Get your Pancake Fix at Flapjack’s

The weekend’s snowy deluge may have had Ottawa locals a-tweeting or a-instagramming about the cruel injustice of continued winter weather with spring having sprung. But, the water-heavy accumulation quickly melted, leaving nary a trace. It being Sunday, remnant grey weather after the early morning storm had me craving comfort. My first thought, pancakes! Pancakes are powerful food. Mention them and just about anyone, born and raised in North America, will conjure up a romanticized image: butter-browned stacks of fluffy goodness, dripping in melted butter and amber maple syrup. [To our Canadian readers, you’d be surprised... | Continue reading article

Remains of Summer: Tacos de Lengua

Taco de Lengua Taco de Lengua

Summer has passed us by. We have no regrets, our preparing for winter by preserving as much of the Autumnal bounty as we can. The harvest is an exciting time for aspiring cooks. This year, we found ourselves generously inundated with foraged apples, crab apples and the like. None were spared. Most will live on as jellies, chutneys, slow cooker butter, and plain ol’ sauce. I am presently working on a sweet chili sauce with the last batch of apple pulp. The chutney is destined for this month’s Thanksgiving feast with friends and family. Now,... | Continue reading article

Food Truck Frida…I mean Saturday: Bao Bao Gongfu Bao!

One of the first Cantonese words I learned to say was “bao,” which loosely translates to English as “bread” and more specifically “bun.” Two years old, my parents recorded my giggling how much I enjoyed bao with a cassette recorder. The tapes were lost shortly after I discovered them amongst my dad’s “Teach Yourself French” material. But, my fondness of sweeter-than-dinner-roll steamed and baked oriental buns lives on. One of the first things Tarek Hassan said to me, after I learned he had successfully applied for one of eighteen newly minted on-street food vendor licenses... | Continue reading article

As tree fruit reddens in the waning summer sunshine, it is time again to reflect on a season’s adventures in the world of tacos. Like last year, many meals in our household took the familiar form of meat and/or vegetables, wrapped in a “tortilla;” tortillas making wonderful edible plates. According to the Random House dictionary, a taco is “often a crispy fried tortilla folded over and filled with seasoned chopped meat, lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese.” The Collins English Dictionary refers somewhat less to the American “hard” taco innovation, “Mexican cookery; a tortilla folded into a... | Continue reading article

This week, CBC Ottawa Morning‘s host Robyn Bresnahan (@RobynBresnahan) initiated a recurring photo contest that may earn participants branded t-shirts. It goes like this: 1) Tweet a themed photo to the @OttawaMorning account by Friday of the given week; 2) One “winning” submission will be chosen. This week’s prize is rumoured to be a Dave Brown t-shirt. This week’s them is “remains of summer.” While I’m not entirely sure who Dave Brown is, I love Twitter photo contests, so asked for a hashtag, which no one seems to be using: #ottmornpic (#fail). That said, this... | Continue reading article

Here at foodiePrints, it’s been a great, but incredibly busy summer. It’s already August and there are still so many food trucks to visit. So, it’s time to catch up with our Food Truck Friday series. This week, we’re visiting bap by Raon Kitchen. Raon Kitchen is the brain child of Hana Jung, a marketing manager, and her husband, Iruk Cho, a web designer (and student in the culinary program at Algonquin College). They moved to Ottawa from Seoul with their young daughter nearly four years ago. Though their popular food cart is new to... | Continue reading article
